Endremit grunted in assent and moved to Shel's side, on the other side of the trowel, employing his own hooked arms to help give him a bit of force from a new angle. After some minutes with both of them straining, the metal of the spade began to pull free from the hard, frozen dirt.
As they worked, Endremit muttered with some amusement, "Hell, I could just dig in this spot and wouldn't have to bother with hauling it up that damn headstone."
The spade suddenly shot up thanks to both of their strength and came entirely free of the dirt, causing the metal to come free from Endremit's hooks and throw him back onto his ass.

Shel let out a short cry of surprise as the spade came up faster then he had expected it to. He flung out a hand to keep himself upright, but he found nothing to grab onto and instead further unbalanced himself. The thin layer of snow on the ground did nothing to cushion his fall, and he found himself getting a little less enjoyment out of the stuff. He lay there for a moment, stunned, before slowly rolling over and getting to his feet.
On the bright side, the trowel had been quite effectively removed from the ground. It lay innocently about an inch away, as if it hadn't just tried to jump them. Sparking tool. Glancing back at the place it had been wedged only moments before, he understood Endremit's comment. A curved mark wide enough that he could fit his hands into it was carved into the ground, and given the length of the trowel he was willing to bet it was five or six inches deep.
He knelt by the opening and peeled away some of the dirt at the edge. "You want to just do that? Might as well see if there's something down there so long as we've got an opening already..."

"I think that'll be a lot easier." Endremit grinned a bit as well, glad that they didn't have to exert themselves much more. At least, he hoped not. Then again, before the Mark had set claim to this patch of land, lots of dolls had brought their dead loved ones to be buried here. The moronic dolls figured that they should be laid to rest where the humans were. It was very likely they would find at least one body down here.
He shook his head with silent scorn. Stitchpunks amused the hell out of him. He easily pushed himself onto his feet by using his stiff arms as leverage, and easily began to pull more of the frozen dirt out of the way with the hooks. This was what he was made for. The dirt held together very well because of the cold temperature, and he managed to remove large slabs of it in single pulls. It was here he spotted something shiny.
"Looks like there's something under this big piece. Wanna pull it out while I get the dirt out of the way?"

Shel scrabbled at smaller bits of dirt while Endremit removed the large ones. He was not used to this, and he was constantly fumbling with pebbles and small bits. Sure, he thought to himself. You can take apart and put pieces of brains small delicate minds back together, but you can't pick up dirt properly. Nice going.
Shel looked up, spotting the object to which Endremit spoke of. It was some kind of silvery metal, and was slightly curved. It could be part of a ragdoll, maybe a finger or the edge of an optic. Or it could be trash. Either way it was something, and worth looking at definitely. He reached down and curled his finger around its edge, digging them into the slghtly softer dirt below the surface.
"Ready when you are."

Endremit moved to help without delay, excitement bubbling up in him. It was an odd sort of job, but whatever it was it made him happy to do it. Maybe, he thought, he should start professionally collecting parts instead of saving them to supply to his buyers.
He dug his hooks into the dirt around the structure they'd found, alongside Shel's hands, and gave Shel a quick nod of confirmation. He would pull the opposite way, hoping to efficiently unbury the object while pulling it out at the same time.
"On three. One, two, three--!"

As the word 'three' escaped Endremit's mouth, Shel pulled on the object, grabbing onto it with his other hand as well as the dirt came away exposing more of it. It slid out of the dirt, and he pulled it out of the trench they had dug and propped it up against the fence an inch or two away.
The object was what looked to have once been a small ragdoll, perhaps even a button, for five inches high was not much at all. The silvery frame was heavy enough that he would venture a guess about its identity, maybe steel. It was too heavy to be titanium, and therefore much too heavy to be aluminum. Most of its fabric was gone on the left side, but the right sported scraps of dirty fabric. Its frame was mostly in tact, except for a badly damaged midsection, and it looked like that particular injury had probably been the cause of death.
Shel had never been entirely comfortable with death. It was easy to talk about, but when there was a corpse in front of you it was a little harder. He wasn't sure how it even worked, when ragdolls could just be sewn up or shoved into a new body using alchemy. He knew there had been a couple times when he had been messed up pretty bad in fights and the fabricator had just stuck in a couple new parts and sent him on his way. How could anyone be expected to die when it was that easy to get fixed?
He stepped back a little, drawing in a shuddering breath and pushing those thoughts to the back of his mind. "What do you think? Usable?"

Endremit had released the dirt the moment the body was free, and he paused, shaking loose dust from himself, as he watched Shel position the body against the fence.
He watched Shel's reaction to it idly, and it made him grin with a smugly amused expression, though he said nothing verbally. It was always funny to him to see dolls react to "death", especially when it was with unease. Endremit didn't really believe in death. At least, not in the same way everyone else did. He did not believe anyone still alive was human - at least, not human anymore. So technically they couldn't DIE like humans.
He stepped up with a grunt and began inspecting the little body, lifting up an arm or a foot roughly and letting it drop when he was done looking it over as if it was simply a piece of trash and had not once been a living being.
"Yeah, actually. Very good. I can use pretty much all of it except this left foot, and I can break that down for the components." He stood aside, opening a spot for Shel to approach. "How about you?"

Shel shifted uneasily for a moment, watching Endremit inspect the lifeless doll. He wondered at Endremits tactics, hoping that his companion did not break anything further. He momentarily lifted his own arm to look at it. Maybe it was not a risk. He had been treated far more violently and not broken from it. Perhaps the sense that their prize was so fragile stemmed from the fact that it had obviously not survived such violent blows. But simple prodding should not be enough to break iron he supposed.
He almost jumped when Endremit turned to ask as to his own success with their find, though he was not sure why. He approached the dead doll and stood awkwardly, glancing nervously at Endremit and glad that the one way mirrored glass over his optics made his uncertainty less visible. Was his companion going to watch him dismantle the mind of the dead doll. He supposed it was no more unreasonable for his work to be watched then it had been for him to watch his fellow doll's.
Well, best get this over with, he thought to himself, and then he plunged his clawed hand into the dead one's head. It took him only moments to find the rectangular chip he was seeking, and only a moment more to pull it from the sewn head of the dead button, leaving a ragged hole in the dirty fabric. The chip looked like it should work well enough, and he untwisted the wires on his hand and joined them with the ones sticking out of the chip. He let the information sift through the wires into his mind, enjoying the feeling that he had now a greater capacity for being, and was more then simply himself. He would inspect the memories more closely later. "I believe all is well on my end."
