She smiled brightly, pushing the paper square back down into her pocket and bouncing on her toes a moment. She would defiantly return the paper when they finished what they were doing. Yes, she really, really would. It shouldn't be too hard; all she had to do was keep the paper safe until they split, or maybe- maybe just keep the paper safe forever and not give it back. Oh but I can't just lie, she thought, smiling more at his gesture for her to go ahead and lead. Dove turned sharply on the spot, but kept her balance. She thought for a moment, then looked back at Kuu over her shoulder and said "I think it's that'a way." She pointed to the direction her body was facing. With that she directed herself to going forward with a funny march, and swung her arms (nearly tossing her needle ahead of her). "Just keep the light straight, please sir! Don't wanna end up tripin' or nothing." she thought that funny, like she did nearly everything, and giggled lightly.
About twenty seconds into their quest for batteries, Dove began feeling restless about keeping silent. She decided it'd be nicer if they were talking. Silence may be golden but gold isn't the prettiest color. Blue and pink were much better. Green was even a better color, when used right! She huffed out a sigh and allowed herself to take more of a I'm bored pace. "Soooo." Dove started "Whadda you do for fun? I rather like making things." She hopped he wasn't the terribly boring type who didn't say anything about their personal life. Though really your hobbies weren't that personal, but that could be debated depending on what exactly they were.

After she pointed right in front of her, Kuu nodded and followed along. The sight of her marching made him then shake his head. The light the investigator held was already being kept straight to shine a line just in front of Dove so she could clearly see where she was going. Naturally, it wasn't long before the female was bored of not talking. The question seemed innocent enough though, so Kuu obliged to answer. "Well, I like to make things myself. But mostly I solve... riddles. Yeah. Riddles are my thing. People actually pay me to solve them." It wasn't that far from the truth, what he said. Yet his intent was on hinting further as to how badly he wanted that poem in Dove's pocket. As he explained he gazed side to side at the many different play things mounted on the shelves or discarded on the floor. The boxes and containers all held something that a child would once have found special. Something to expect seeing after opening presents on "Christmas" or their birthday. Then, the action figure isle came into relative view. Kuu could barely make out the shapes of many dolls of various kinds and references towards pop culture and otherwise. "Hold up a second," he suddenly said to Dove as he made out one particular doll on display. "I just want to check this out." Kuu patiently waited for her to go towards where he was now turned, while still keeping the light pointed towards her general direction.

"Oh well that's neat!" she complimented, no thoughts about handing over the poem soon. "Riddles are nice I guess!" Dove herself wasn't all that smart when it came to things like that, as she mentioned earlier. "I just- like I stick things together, and then they like to fall apart, but then I stick them together more, and then they decided to explode and fall apart again so I'm like 'nooo'. But it's okay because some things work better than others." She nodded vigorously, remembering the times her crafts didn't work out so well. One time she had tried to glue some metal bits onto wood using a big bottle half full of the substance. In the end, she was the one who was glued to the wood! Took a while to get herself free and cleaned off; glue sticks to fabric terribly easy, but it washed off with water so she just used a wet cloth and a bowl of old rain water.
She picked up her pace a little more, entertained with talk. "I like this place. I like. .everything." She was a bit zoned out while looking at the toys and various other fun things in the dim lighting. A frown came over her face for but a moment, disappointed in her self proclaimed resistance to hoarding for the day. She'd have to come back later, to take all the nice things.
"Hold up a second, I just want to check this out."
"Hm?" Dove stopped and turned around, clinking her toes on the floor. "Okay." She stepped forward to go with him, wondering if he found the batteries some where she wasn't going to check for them. It was a possibility!

As soon as he could shine the light where he wanted, Kuu illuminated the box that contained precisely what he had figured it did from what he could make out of it in the dark. The letters on the front of the box read, 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes' " Isn't that something? Right within reach, too," Kuu remarked as he came closer to the box. What could be seen through the clear plastic was a stitchpunk sized doll of the classic literary consulting detective, looking as if he was brought straight out of the pages of the books. The short, well kept looking(albeit molded plastic) hair. The vintage looking clothes in their best rendition of late nineteenth century style. Along the side of the doll in the plastic casing were the hunting cap, a plastic tobacco pipe, and a violin. " If you don't know who this guy is... Well, he solves riddles like I do. Just he does that in the stories he's in... Sherlock. I have wondered for some time... what I'd look like in his clothing." The look in Kuu's eyes was very imaginative at that moment. Then out of the corner of his eye, he saw another interesting box. " Dick Tracy...? And what's this one behind it?" Kuu shoved the box containing the fictional police detective doll in yellow aside to reveal what was also poking his imagination. He read the lettering on the front, and was intrigued. 'The FBI Story John Michael "Chip" Hardesty' Just what was "the FBI Story"? Some book that Kuu never read or even read about? Either way, one statement came out of his mouth. " Heh heh. Now that's more like it." The bluish grey suit and matching hat. The mid-twentieth century Federal Agent look. It was almost too much to take in. Any other time, or rather if things seemed to be more hard pressed, Kuu would try harder not to be so impulsive. Yet, the art he saw in within these boxes was enough to drive him towards doing something a little... silly, even. " I've got to try some of these on," he stated with a direct glance at Dove.

"Isn't what something?" Her eyes kept on the light, wondering exactly what was 'something' about the fellow in the box. "I guess if you like that sorta toy, then it is somethin'!" Dove was trying to be supportive, though she had little interest in humanized dolls. The look of humans didn't appeal to her very much; if she ever found their bones, however, those were just fine, and even welcomed. The name Sherlock sounded familiar, as if she'd heard the name before, though she really hadn't. "Sherlock. Sherlock. I need ta write that name down!" Such a nice sounding name needed to be remembered! She would write it down somewhere, go home, and list it on a sticky note with a few other names and words she liked. She looked around, but of course there wasn't any paper in this particular isle. The riddle! She could write the name down on the folded square paper. Only, she had to give Kuu the paper back later, so that would be a problem. That, and she didn't have anything to write with.
Dove stayed quiet while Kuu went about his business, checking out some more dolls for whatever reason. She was thinking; she could find another piece of paper, scribble something on the inside, then fold it like the riddle he wanted was folded. Then she could write the name Sherlock on the real paper, and keep that one, then give the fake one to Kuu. But where would you find paper in a toy store? Maybe they'd have some sketch books that young humans used for drawing on. The paper would be awfully big though, and if she tore it it would give it away. Dove would have to be careful if she wanted to keep the riddle, but it did sound like a lot of trouble to go through for a little piece of paper with fancy words. She'd have to search for paper, and it'd have to be the right size, and-
"I've got to try some of these on"
Pulled out of her inward argument, Dove put on a quick smile and looked back at Kuu to show she was most certainly not distracted. "Doll clothes? That'ed be fun! If you're goin' to, then I'm goin' to too! It'll be like dress up. I don't think I've ever had someone t' play with, two will be much more interesting!" She almost shook with the excitement of it, quickly forgetting her plans on trying to trick him in favor for how amazing this was going to be.

Kuu almost caught himself on how impulsive and in a sense crazy this was when Dove suddenly stated she wanted to join in as well. But, it wouldn't hurt to play around for a bit. " Alright. I'm sure there should be some dolls of girls around here somewhere... Like that one right there," he said as he then pointed with his finger as well as the light at a particular box. It contained a very female doll, wearing a sparkling green dress. On the outside of the box, along the side and front it read, 'Dark City Emma Murdoch' Another title he wasn't aware of. Perhaps they were movies, which the investigator was not as highly educated in as he was with books and other random information. Upon closer inspection of this doll and its clothing, Kuu then frowned and started looking at the other boxes. " That one doesn't really fit your age... Uhmmm... How about this one?" He pointed at a box a couple more down that on its label read, 'The Wizard of Oz Dorothy' It looked more promising to fit Dove's age, as it was a much younger looking doll and style of clothes. A blue and white dress. Red slippers(although they probably wouldn't fit Dove's feet). " Here, I'll lend you the light. Go ahead and open it," said Kuu as he held the light out for her to grab a hold of.

Girl dolls? Dove was a little disappointed she wasn't going to be dressing up in some nice young man's clothes and strutting around pretending to be a boy. That would have been just hilarious. Many "haa haa hee hee hoo hoo's" would have been hawked out loudly in a splendorous act of comedy preformed by the young girl. Aw well. Maybe she still could, after she tried on a females outfit first. The first doll Kuu pointed out for her seemed a bit- not like Dove at all. Far too feminine for a girl like her. It was a pretty dress though. Oh she wanted a scrap of that fabric. "You don't know my age." she remarked, thinking herself clever. She didn't know how old she was exactly, but she did know it was somewhere around what the humans called the "teen years". Close to maturity physically, but not mature in mind in the slightest. Her body its self was at least a year old, though.
His second choice was actually much better; it was a smaller, younger human figure with a cute dress and sparkling shoes. "She's very pretty." Dove complimented and nodded, even if the dress wasn't as wonderful as the other ones green dress, she still liked it very much. "I'll try this one on then." She took the light and politely thanked Kuu, then went to knock the case down on the floor. Dove mentally tried to figure out how to get it out of the box, letting it fell with a 'thud'. You could no longer see the doll on the inside, only the paper on the back. "How I get this open?" she asked out loud, though didn't appear to look at Kuu for an answer. She took a moment, before holding her needle high, then stabbed the box with a 'umph'. Again, she stabbed it, trying to actually get the gosh darn needle through. It probably would have been easier just to try and lift the panels that held it inside. All you had to do was take the tape off, then lift, and the lifted flap would allow you to just pop the girl right out. She may be strapped in, though, for extra protection.

As soon as Dove held the light in her hand, Kuu went straight back to the boxes he was looking at before. It was dark without the light, yet he still knew exactly where they were. With a few motions, the tape holding down the top flap of the box in question was removed, and the box was open at the top. Kuu then moved to another box, yet before he went to open it he turned his glance back when Dove asked how to open her box. Her following actions with the needle stabbing were quite entertaining to watch, yet Kuu frowned and called out to get her attention so he could... educate. "Hey! No need to be so rough! You'll just tire yourself out. I'll show you how to open it. Just shine the light my way so you can see." He waited for her to do so, and as soon as he was confident Dove could see what he was doing Kuu repeated the procedure he used on the other box he opened first. He even stood in such a way that his body wasn't obscuring his hands or what they were working with. Then Kuu went further in showing how to get the doll itself out of the box. He did this by gently knocking the box down onto the ground and he then lifted the bottom end, shaking it from side to side to let gravity pull the doll and the plastic surrounding it out and slide onto the floor. "There's the plastic casing you have to worry about, and the twist ties that hold the doll in it as well. All you do is just... find the tape holding the case together, like so... then-" Kuu interrupted himself as he tore the upper plastic casing. "-you look for all those stubborn... twist ties." Then, one by one Kuu went to work on untwisting each of the twist ties holding the Sherlock doll tight to the plastic. In less than half a minute, the doll was free and Kuu lifted it up and then stood it on the floor. "Just like that!" he said with a smile and a glance at Dove.

Dove stopped trying to poke a hole in the plastic box when she heard Kuu's voice, feeling like she'd done something wrong. Which, of course, she had. She let the light shine on him even before he asked for it, feeling it only right he have it on him while speaking. "Okay." Dove said sheepishly, tilting her head down in a rather embarrassed way. She watched carefully and attentively as Kuu- rather slowly- began to show her exactly how to open the darned box. She took a glance at her own box every so often, to see where the parts on it were. The whole time she kept thinking about how unintelligent she must seem. She was really, truly, as dumb as a rock. As dumb as the exact same rock that was also lazy and refused to grow legs and move its self. Kuu shook the doll out and told her about the casing and pesky ties that aided in holding the doll safe inside. When he was done showing the feathered girl, Dove dropped her needle and sat the light down in a single movement; eager to quickly take out Dorothy and prove to Kuu she was just as smart as he was!
Her hands found the tape and took it off, then clawed at the flap to get it up. With it up, she could get at the doll! Dove knew Kuu had gotten his out by shaking the casing, but she had a better idea. Rather than lift the end to let it slowly slide out, she tired to reach inside it with a hand, so she could pull it out. That was a lot harder, actually. Her metal fingers couldn't keep a good grip, unless she could poke them into the plastic somehow. She resorted to doing it his way and lifted the bottom to shake the casing covered girl out. "See, I got this." Taking the doll out of the rest of the plastic wasn't as hard as the thought it would be. The ties were a little tough but she got them untied quick enough. "I'm just as smart as you are!" The doubt hit her again, like a brick(thrown at a poor little bird). "I am smart, right?" It didn't sound much like a self-doubting question though.

Kuu held the smile on his face as Dove tried her best to follow his instructions. When she tried to improvise on the instructions a little, he raised a hand and frowned as he almost said something about it. Yet, Kuu kept his mouth shut as he felt his words might come off as harsh and he could tell from Dove's body language and tone from when she acknowledged his instruction that she was a little sensitive about not being able to figure it out on her own right away. As soon as the young minded stitchpunk managed to get the doll out of the box, Kuu found himself laughing a little and that he was actually glad she figured it out now. It was fairly strange the relationship they seemed to have now, as Kuu was starting to see this Dove as an illegitimate child he had just adopted. The only negative feeling he felt was a touch of sadness as he figured this might be the closest he'd ever get to being a father. Then, of course came Dove's sudden question asked in her lack of self confidence. The fact she was so anxious to be as smart as he was made Kuu very uncomfortable at first. He of course didn't want to do anything that would influence the girl to storm out on him while she still had the evidence in her pocket. But, he actually felt genuine pity for Dove that he couldn't quite find a better reason for other than just the father-like role he felt he was taking with the girl. "Of course you're smart!" he burst out after a couple seconds of hesitation. "You decided to help me out and let me help you, so you have that going for you. You also know how to have a little fun, like put on doll clothes and see how you look in 'em. Now, I'll turn away and let you get dressed in that while I throw these on myself. No peeking at each other, okay?" Now, it was pretty much confirmed as far as Kuu's role as the father figure. His tone even made him out to sound a lot like one naturally, much to even his own surprise. Like he said, he turned himself around to face away from Dove. He then began to strip the doll's clothing, and after finishing, Kuu called back to her without looking. "You're facing the other way, right?" he asked to confirm before he started donning the clothing. Something just felt off about the thought of them getting dressed in view of one another, which is why Kuu was suggesting they get dressed in this way.

A big grin came over her face, and her back straightened. Oh, she really was smart! If someone like Kuu thought so, then it had to be true! This fella was going to be her friend. He would be her BEST friend, if he kept talking highly of her. Of course everyone is Dove's friend, but since she didn't have any actual friends that stuck, he would be her best friend by default. She could make him things and draw them together doing fun things, and they could go on adventures! She was getting ahead of herself; this stitchpunk may have been kind enough to boost her self esteem, but he still wanted the riddle which she also very much wanted. Which brought her back to how she was going to keep it, if she wasn't going to go through with that first plan. Dove's mind wandered so much, it was hard to keep track of what she was thinking a minute ago and what she was thinking a few seconds ago. She always came back to her thoughts if something reminded her, though.
"No peeking at each other, okay?"
"D'okay." When his back faced her, Dove stared a moment lost in thought before obeying and turning around as well. "Uh-huh, facin' other way." Dove assured him, tilting her head to one side and looking down at the human figure with its cute clothes. She proceeded with taking the clothes off it, the dress slipping off fairly easy as it was held by Velcro. She wouldn't be able to wear the shoes, but they sparkled so she wanted them anyways, despite her trying to not take a lot. So, she slipped those off too. Dove had never tried on clothes like these before, as odd as it was considering how curious she was about things. The thought never occurred to her that she could take clothes off of dolls and wear them for her own. She took a moment trying to get her arms and hands through the sleeves, even though the dress was slightly big for her but not by much. It went down to about her ankles, and made her look more kid like than she already was. She had to pop her feathers out from under the fabric, as hiding them bothered her. "I think I got it." The trouble was the Velcro "But I can't put the Velcro stuff together!" She reached back, trying to get the two sides together, to no avail. Those sparkling shoes would go into her pocket before they left to continue their search.

It wasn't much trouble at all for Kuu to don the particular set of clothes he was set on trying out first. He began with the pants as soon as he was satisfied by Dove's answer(which he trusted without peeking to make sure). Now, actually the pants were a little trouble as they were tight around the rather loose fabric already covering Kuu's legs. The rest of the suit fit... rather like a glove it seemed. Then the overcoat came about, followed by the classic hunting cap which Kuu took special care in placing over his head. As soon as he was able to pick up the fake plastic tobacco pipe, and make a couple mock puffs on it he heard Dove's cry about velcro. Kuu turned around slowly while still holding the pipe end in his mouth. He then knew what Dove was talking about as with most dresses, the girl needed someone's help in securing it on(although he was used to it being a zipper from the few novels he read where the characters ran into this particular situation). " Okay, hold on. I'll get it for you," Kuu said as he quickly approached. As he came near though, he accidentally knocked his foot into the Dorothy doll. As it was jostled, something activated a mechanism within the doll that played a musical number obviously from the film the doll in question was based on. (click for music)The sound of it startled Kuu just a little, as he didn't expect it and it stopped him in his tracks. Then the sudden memory behind this particular song stirred and played back in his mind... which didn't stop him from continuing towards Dove to pull the velcro pieces together and attach them. Just, he did it slowly with care... and a very tragic expression on his face. Kuu gave the velcro a downward stroke along Dove's back to make sure it was secure, and then the investigator's optics seemed to focus on... oblivion or whatever was in the distance. " There you go, Dove. It... looks good on you," he said trying not to sound as depressed as he was, even as the music continued to play throughout the whole song. The lack of tear ducts seemed to be a plus, as Kuu couldn't help but turn away slowly and lift a hand over his optics. Then, after the thought of Dove, the father figure role and everything else that was going on, he decided not to let the memories burden him. Just like on that recording he listened to of his former self, Kuu started quietly singing along with it. " ...And the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true." As much as he enjoyed good music, Kuu wasn't as well talented with instruments as he was with his singing voice... as in, not nearly as talented. Although, he could at least carry a note and not sound completely embarrassing. What Kuu found embarrassing now was that he was singing this song while in a Sherlock Holmes getup. He only sang that one line, and then slowly turned back to Dove. " Would you care to dance, darling?" he asked in a very bad attempt at a British accent. It was the thought that mattered though... in spite of the fake tobacco pipe that he held in his mouth.

Dove thanked him and waited for him to come secure it, letting her arms drop and listening to the sound of his foot steps. It seemed that he'd accidentally kicked the now-dressless doll before he'd reached her, though. "Ya okay?" she looked back, having asked a question that obviously would be answered yes. The music was a surprise, but it didn't startle her as it appeared to have Kuu. Now that she thought about it- the girl the doll was supposed to be did feel a little familiar, too, like the name Sherlock. Which she still needed to write down, by the way. The memory must be something from when she was human, but it was so faint she disregarded it as unimportant.
He finally got the Velcro fixed for her, so now the dress felt more snug around her torso. "Thanks! Maybe'll bring it home with me." She turned to face him and smoothed the dress with her hands, then kicked a leg up. For a moment she was oblivious to how Kuu was feeling, but it was hard to miss with how suddenly detached he'd gotten. She didn't get a chance to compliment how nice he was in the clothes he'd chosen, because of how the mood seemed to call for anything but compliments. Unless they would make him feel better, that is. "Are'ya alright?"
Rather than a yes or no answer, she was answered with another question. That didn't tell her much about why he looked so down, but she could guess that either the song was just plain sad to him, or it has something to do with memories. "I-I-well I don't know how ta dance! But I can twirl, if you wanna see that." she gave a little smile and a light laugh, hoping the reply was good enough for him. And oh- being called darling was rather nice. That was such a fancy word!

A soft smile came on Kuu's face, and he then came close to Dove while still keeping a respectful(non-intimate) distance. He then placed his left hand on her waist while taking her right hand in his own. "Just step side to side like this," instructed Kuu again, as he tried to guide Dove into a very simple yet lovely little dance step. The moment lasted for only about a minute and a half as the song ended in just that amount of time. Yet, it was actually a pleasant moment now that Kuu wasn't so dragged down by the tragedy behind his passed experience with the song. The line about "bluebirds" actually helped as it made him think of Dove with her feathers and the blue fabric. "Why, oh why can't I?" It made him think that if Dove could be made happy, why should he not be happy himself?
A moment after the music ended, Kuu stood still where he was. Then he dropped Dove's hand and withdrew his own from her side. The copper digits of the right hand then reached up to the fake drop-step tobacco pipe, and Kuu gave a few thoughtful mock puffs on it. He was remarking about how he might possibly be getting attached to Dove at this moment.
"Perhaps... well, perhaps not, rather. Not my place."
"I think I'm going to try another one of those on," he said out loud as he turned and walked back to the doll boxes in question.

It was odd to have someone so close. It even felt a little scary! But Kuu certainly was no danger as apparent that if he wanted to harm her or deceive her he surly would have done it already. So, she tried to trust him and not look too scared of such close contact. He instructed her how to do whatever dance this was, which was really easy! Just stepping this way than that, and not really that fast. You couldn't go very fast to a song like this, anyways. "Ohhhh, I'm doing it!" She started to wiggle with excitement but stopped herself so she wouldn't end up messing up the rhythm. "This is nice! Also, your clothes'er nice!" Finally she commented on his clothes, glad she remembered to before the moment passed.
Eventually the song faded and the doll stopped her singing, leaving them with a sort of silence once more(other than the sound of wind blowing things outside every so often). Once Dove had her hand back, she looked about with a sort of urgency in trying to remember something, then went to pick up one of the sparkling red slippers and stuff it in her pocket. "That was fun!" She went ahead and pushed down on the paper and cotton too. "M'kay. I'll just keep this dress, I don'wanna try on nothin' else ta-day." She sat down on the floor beside the light, looking for her needle and having to stretch to get it. "Do I have ta turn aroun' again?"
